Family Photos Should be Stress-Free!
Family photos with little ones can feel overwhelming, but they don’t have to be! As a Tampa lifestyle family photographer, I specialize in creating a relaxed, playful atmosphere where kids can be themselves—no stiff poses or forced smiles. If you’re worried about how your little ones will behave during a photo session, I got you! Here’s how to make your family session stress-free, fun, and full of genuine smiles.
Featuring the Vickers Family
1. Embrace the Chaos
Little kids have big energy, and that’s what makes their personalities shine in photos! Instead of expecting them to sit perfectly still, we’ll capture natural, playful moments that tell your family’s real story. I think you'll find years down the road that some of your favorite images are of your kids being their full selves...even if that includes some tears or running away from the camera. I am big on capturing moments for what they are, not what we feel they should be based on a picture perfect ideal.
2. Choose a Familiar, Kid-Friendly Location
The best family photos happen when kids are comfortable and relaxed. Whether it’s your backyard, your living room, or a local park, a familiar setting helps kids feel at ease and ready to play. If you’re not sure where to shoot, I can recommend beautiful outdoor locations in Tampa, Riverview, St. Pete, and Clearwater that are picture perfect.
3. Plan Around Nap Time for Happy Smiles
Tired or hungry kids = cranky kids. How are you when you're hangry? Exactky. I always recommend scheduling sessions when your child is well-rested and fed to ensure they’re in the best mood possible. Golden hour (just before sunset) provides dreamy, soft lighting, but I can also work around your child’s schedule to find the best time for your family. PS. Bring snacks. Maybe not cheetos, but please bring snacks. You will be grateful you did.
4. Make it Playful & Engaging
Rather than forcing stiff poses, I guide families through fun, interactive prompts that encourage laughter and movement. Some of my go-to prompts include:
- “Run to Mommy and give her the biggest hug!”
- “Spin in circles with Dad and see who gets dizzy first!”
- “Whisper a silly secret in your sibling’s ear!”
You can even bring a favorite toy or comfort item to help little ones feel more at ease.
5. Be comfy...and cute!
Your little one’s comfort is key! Choose soft, non-restrictive clothing so they can move freely. Avoid stiff collars, itchy fabrics, or anything that might make them uncomfortable. Neutral tones, soft pastels, and earth tones look beautiful in natural light and keep the focus on your family’s connection.
6. Don’t Stress – I’ve Got You!
As a Tampa Bay family photographer, I know that kids can be unpredictable—but that’s what makes your photos unique! My approach is relaxed and flexible, ensuring that even the wildest moments turn into authentic, joy-filled memories.
